Currently, South Korea seems more westernized than any other Western society, to the extent that it looks deformed. In addition, individualism is at its peak due to neoliberalism and capitalism. We now live in an era where we don't know who our neighbors are, let alone the fact that it is impolite to greet them.
As someone who has spent a long time in Germany, I find South Korea's rapid and extreme individualization and human isolation to be a noticeable phenomenon. This rapid change arose various social problems. For example, there is the problem of isolation among youth and the elderly. Moreover, with the COVID-19 pandemic approaching its third year, the world realized how important community, solidarity, and care are and recognize that individual isolation is a serious social problem.
I believe that the solution to these global social problems could be South Korea's old culture; a sense of mutual aid, neighbors, neighborliness, and affection. As recently as 30 years ago, women gathered at a local hair salon to chat and care for each other. About 80 years ago, the ‘Ppallaeteo’ (traditional Korean wash place) was an important reciprocal space for Korean women.
Will we stand by the current society that completely blocks or tries to block each other? We seem to be at an important crossroads where we can try to inherit good culture from the past and accept new concepts from the present to create a healthy society, like the philosophy of thesis-antithesis-synthesis.

현재 우리나라는 어느 서구사회보다 더 서구화된 기형적 서구화가 진행되고 있는듯 하다. 또한 신자유주의와 자본주의의 결합으로 개인주의가 극에 치닫고 우리는 이제 이웃집에 누가 사는지도 모를뿐더러 이웃에게 인사를 하면 실례가 되는 시대에 살고 있다.
독일에서 오래 살다가 온 나에게 한국의 빠른 극단적 개인주의와 인간 고립화는 아주 눈에 띄는 현상이다. 이러한 빠른 변화는 여러 사회문제를 야기한다. 청년, 노인 고립문제 등이 있다. 3년이 다되어가는 코로나 팬더믹으로 전세계는 공동체와 연대, 돌봄이 얼마나 중요한 지 자각했고 한 개인의 고립이 심각한 사회문제임을 인식하였다.
나는 이러한 전 지구적 사회문제의 해결책으로 한국의 옛 상부상조 호혜문화, 이웃사촌 선린의식, 정이 될 수 있다고 보았다. 불과 30년 전만 하여도 동네 미용실에는 여인네들이 삼삼오오모여 수다를 떨고 서로를 보살피고 돌보았다. 세월을 80년으로 앞당기면 빨래터는 여성들의 중요한 호혜 공간이였다.
서로를 완벽하게 차단하는 혹은 차단하려는 지금의 사회를 두고만 볼 것인가. 정반합의 철학과 같이 우리의 좋은 것을 계승하고 새로운것을 받아들여서 또 다른 새로운 건강한 사회를 만들지를 고민해볼수 있는 중요한 기로에 우리는 서있는듯 하다.
